2-17-2012

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The Yamaha FX HO treated itself to quite an update for 2012, on both the mechanical and style fronts. It now offers improved stability, comfort and versatility, all wrapped up in a sleek new package.

Tried and true
The heart of the 2012 Yamaha FX HO beats to the rhythm of a 1,812 cc, naturally aspirated four specially designed for PWCs. It punches out 180 hp at 7,600 rpm thanks to dual overhead camshafts and a 11.0:1 compression ratio. Unlike the competition, the FX HO’s high-performance engine uses regular unleaded fuel, making for happy campers at the pump.

The mill features complicated electronics that manage various functions, such as ignition timing, injection mapping, engine diagnostics and steering assist during deceleration. The latter gives you excellent control of the craft even when you release the throttle. Finally, a ride-by-wire system and a new No Wake feature create a more user-friendly experience.

All-new hull
The carefully reengineered hull ensures greater stability and control. The Yamaha FX HO is a luxury craft that offers not only comfort for those lazy summer afternoons but thrills for the sporty rider as well. The 2 + 1 seat offers better support under acceleration and the longer steering column creates a more relaxed riding position. You can adjust it higher and straighter as well, so you can tackle those waves standing up, without having to bend over.

The FX HO features a redesigned, easy-to-read instrument panel and flashy, ergonomic new mirrors that improve visibility. The storage compartments up front, on the dash and in back offer a total of 125 litres of space to stash you things, including a nook for the water-ski tow rope. The rear platform is larger and the ladder is longer too, so you can hop in and out of the water with ease.

Thrilling ride
Tested on a large lake northwest of Toronto on a windy day, the Yamaha FX HO was great fun. It’s well suited to both casual cruising and sporty frolicking. The surprisingly powerful and responsive engine serves up thrilling accelerations. I even started to wonder how someone could want more from a PWC! Under an enthusiastic hand, the FX’s naturally aspirated engine is more fuel-efficient than its supercharged brother. Although more potent, the latter just doesn’t offer the same flexibility.

And the near-perfect riding position just doubles your fun too. Rather low and very comfortable, it allows riders to throw their weight around and lower the centre of gravity when turning. Performance-wise, the FX HO hits 100 clicks without batting an eyelash. At that speed, the craft is reminiscent of a frisky kart shod in slick tires, i.e., your wish is its command.
