2011 Suzuki V-Strom 650A ABS review

Suzuki brings us a more equipped and more fine-tuned version of the V-Strom, the people's choice for venturing far from home without breaking the bank. A very popular ride among Canadians, backed by an impressive resume.

Excellent powerplant
The V-Strom has made huge strides over the years. A bit harsh at first but still modern enough, the engine now proves exemplary thanks to a host of updates. Arguably one of the best ever produced by Suzuki, it no longer feels jerky at low revs and nauseating at high revs. The sharper, more rider-friendly transmission delivers the quick shifts required by dirt riding.

Even at just 645 cc, the smaller V-Strom is surprisingly lively. As long as you flirt with the redline, you can take advantage of a decidedly-sporty machine. The sound of the airbox, which might be a tad too much for this type of bike, also adds to the thrill.

Adventure and touring
Two saddlebags and a centre compartment turn the V-Strom into a long-distance tourer. In my opinion, these new attributes wonderfully mesh with the philosophy of the V-Strom 650A and its twin-cylinder engine, which doesn't require any particular care or effort. Same thing for the revised 6-speed gearbox – sharper, quicker and all around more pleasant to work with. Moreover, the 22-litre fuel tank provides interesting range; you can easily cover 300 kilometres and even reach 400 if you show some restraint with the throttle.
