2011 Victory Cross Country Review

12-13-2011

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Balanced and comfortable
With regard to comfort, Victory did its homework. The more aerodynamic windshield and deflectors mitigate the awful turbulence that typically plagues this sort of machine beyond 90 km/h. The wide rider's seat, generous floorboards and easily-accessible handlebar make for a relaxing stance and a longer time on the road.

While long, heavy (765 lbs or 347 kg) and cumbersome, the Cross Country handles like a medium-displacement cruiser. You enjoy immediate, intuitive control and benefit from sound riding dynamics and balance. Credit goes to the ultra-rigid aluminum frame, the excellent 43 mm inverted front fork, and the single rear gas shock that never bottoms out on rough pavement.

You can have fun on country roads by attacking corners head on and powering your way out of them. There's just enough ground clearance to lean the bike at a pleasant angle and limit braking through corners. Of course, don't kid yourself: The brakes may be competent and easy to modulate, but they're not backed by ABS.

Bottom line

While at first the Cross Country doesn't seem to possess the unmistakable soul of other American motorcycles, it largely makes up for it with superb touring attributes, nicely tuned mechanical components, a comfortable ride, plus an understated character that formidably allows long-distance travel. Competitive pricing isn't always a sign of mediocre quality and this couldn't be more evident here.
After all, it's a Victory.
