2010 Honda VT1300CT Interstate Review

12-7-2010

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The new 2010 Honda VT1300CT Interstate didn't get all the attention it deserved being simultaneously introduced with the more flamboyant VT1300CX Fury. While it fails to deliver the same visual punch, the low-slung Interstate still displays a certain elegance. And it's not merely a less expensive variant of the late VTX1800T. The VT1300CT boasts a unique personality thanks in large part to an exceptionally-responsive and lively V-twin.

One of the world's best
The engine of the Honda VT1300CT, well known from the old VTX lineup, is arguably one of the most pleasant twin-cylinders in the world. Beyond its flawless design and build quality, it impresses with superb dynamics. For instance, you can ride in 4th gear under 40 km/h and then shoot forward without any hesitation, just a deep growl and a sweet mechanical feel.

While it doesn't behave like its feisty American competitors, this 1,312-cc, 52-degree V-twin with dual counterbalance shafts is quite responsive and genuinely rewarding despite a steady rev buildup. The single-pin crankshaft plays a role, too; in Harley fashion, both pistons rise and drop at the same time but each gets a separate firing order.

The VT1300CT features a 5-speed transmission that's been specifically designed for a touring-type cruiser. Shifts are met with a convincing sound and the two highest gears help lower the revs to improve fuel economy and comfort. Fear not, like any competent transmission offered by Honda, this one requires minimal effort.

A cruiser through and through
Despite the significant overall weight of the machine, the tubular steel chassis never feels overloaded. The VT1300CT proves stable on the road; however, the excessively-soft front fork (especially the damping), the aggressive, chopper-style rake and the 140-mm wide front tire compromise its agility and precision. The rider therefore has to work harder to point in the desired direction, almost as if the bike refused to obey.
