2009 Vespa S 50 Preview

6-21-2009

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The Vespa S family expands for 2009 with the addition of the new, smaller-displacement S 50. While retaining the qualities of its larger sibling, especially the premium finish and attractive design, this scooter offers brand enthusiasts a greener, more efficient alternative to larger and more expensive machines.

The Vespa S 50 takes direct aim at hip young riders who demand more than just basic transportation.

You think it’s hard to differentiate the various models from the Italian manufacturer? Well, the new S 50 will not help you in that area, with a fusion of other Vespas style, such as a rectangular headlight and rounded seat which recall some older units from the 1970s. The stylish lines are enhanced by a touch of sportiness and lots of chrome, from the mirrors to the single-arm front suspension and the headlight trim.

Thrift and extra room

The Canadian S 50 features a frisky air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, four valve single-cylinder engine uses 2.9L of fuel per 100 km, which translates into a 300 km range with the 8.7L fuel tank.

The S 50 used the 150cc model platform, trading the extra 20-odd kilos against more legroom as well as space for the eco grocery bag.

Well equipped – but not to excess
The S 50 comes with the standard minimum equipment of the typical 50cc scooter: a storage compartment under the seat for a half-helmet and some smaller other items, two small bins on the front cowl, a center stand AND a side stand (Bravo!), a kick start, and storage space for an anti-theft chain.

The rider benefits from a well-executed, easy-to-read instrument cluster with full chrome trim for a stylish retro look. The instruments include a fuel gauge with reserve indicator, a clock, and an oil pressure idiot light, but no daily trip meter.
