2009 Sea-Doo RXT Preview

3-29-2009

With over 20 years of experience in personal watercraft development, BRP's Sea-Doo division is once again showcasing its technological and mechanical know-how with the introduction of the all-new and revolutionary 2009 RXT iS 255.

Power and safety
Sporting a more modern, angular look, the 2009 RXT is motivated by a 255-horsepower, supercharged Rotax 4-TEC engine that delivers relatively-high efficiency and low emissions -- with Neutral between said engine and the jet pump (an industry's first). Thanks to Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC), the engine now starts up in neutral mode, allowing it to run without propelling the craft forward. It makes for easier docking maneuvers by reducing approach speed (through power disengagement of the pump shaft).

Unlike open-loop cooling systems, which draw water from the riding environment directly into the engine, Sea-Doo's closed-loop system uses coolant to keep the engine running at the ideal temperature, much like a car's radiator. It also keeps out corrosive saltwater and debris.

Another brand innovation can be found on the new RXT iS, not to mention the GTX Limited iS: the world's first braking system for a personal watercraft. With the simple squeeze of a lever on the left handlebar, riders can stop the watercraft on demand. Anytime the brake lever is squeezed, the engine will stop and then start again in reverse, meaning the jet pump will shoot forward instead of backward. As a result, the RXT is able to come to a full stop 31 meters earlier than a conventional watercraft. Awesome!

Revolutionary hull
The S3 hull of the 2009 Sea-Doo RXT has been entirely redesigned and now weighs 22 kilos less. For optimum control, it features a deep-V front end which stabilizes the watercraft in straight lines and adds "grip" in corners. In the back, the stepped design creates a low-pressure zone, reducing drag and fuel consumption while improving top-end speed. Also, lateral wave impact is minimized thanks to rounder, thinner sides, resulting in very little body roll or change in direction.

In other news, Sea-Doo is launching the first watercraft full suspension ever. The Intelligent Suspension (iS) allows the hull to move independently of the upper deck, isolating the rider and passenger from the impact of rough waves with 6 inches (15 centimeters) of travel. The system also offers preload adjustability through a control near the left handlebar. Therefore, the RXT iS 255 readily adapts to fit changing conditions, the number of passengers or personal preferences.
