2009 Nissan cube 1.8 SL Review

7-7-2009

by Marc Bouchard , Auto123.com

There are few things in life you can be certain about. Aside from death and taxes, a new one has emerged and become a favorite of mine. It’s the fact that the all-new Nissan cube leaves absolutely no one indifferent.

It’s a unique alternative and a friendly runabout for equally unique and friendly folks.

Never in my career have I felt so much attention on me while I was driving a flying saucer… er, I mean automobile -- except maybe the time when I cruised downtown in one of the very first smart fortwo.

The cube is unique in every way, starting with the name, which Nissan insists must be written in lower cases!

Both inside and out, the cube’s styling is different and stands out from everything else on the road right now. We often compare cars to "boxes on wheels", but this one actually is. And it’s a small box, too -- closer to a compact hatchback than a compact SUV.

Granted, this cube features soft edges and angles. Overall, it’s still a one-of-a-kind shape that turns every head on the street.

In the back, designers worked miracles to make people believe that the rear window is round and seemingly endless on one side. In reality, you’ll find the same frame as a traditional window. Bottom line: it’s not all magic squares with this cube.

As boxy as it may be on the outside, this little people hauler is all curvy inside. The gauges are round, in conventional fashion, but the thing that stands out the most is the big, circular interface encompassing the various climate and audio controls. To top it all off, the headliner pattern features multiple concentric circles, as if the overhead light was a rain drop hitting a water surface. How refreshing!
