2009 Kymco Frost 200i First Impressions

4-3-2009

by Amyot Bachand , moto123.com

A cute new 200-cc scooter will make its debut this spring, the Frost 200i. I recently rode a pre-production model and found the fuel-injected, single-cylinder machine to be an effective performer. This machine seemed to be well suited for urban use by beginners and intermediate riders.

The Kymco Frost 200i is attractive, as the designers managed to give it a very modern and trendy look, an attractive evolution from the classic and much loved Vespa style. The front fairing is particularly well executed and will be easy to customise with various appliqués and accessories.

Designers have given the Frost 200 a very modern and trendy look, while still leaving a hint of classic Vespa style.

Comfortable ergonomics
The seat shape provides comfortable space for all shapes and sizes of riders, both front and back. The storage compartment under the seat provides enough space for an open-face helmet or a briefcase. Putting the Frost on its center stand feels effortless despite it's 140 kg mass. The controls are easy to manipulate, and the LCD gauges very legible. As with other Kymco models, a discreet and convenient fuel cap is found below the instrument panel.

Modest performance
The liquid-cooled engine generates 12.5 horsepower. making for modest acceleration, adequate for urban riding only, specially with a heavier rider on board. I would like to see an extra four or five horses, to turn the bike into a quick urban tool, as well as a competent highway performer.

Braking performance is solid with both front and rear discs. However, you have to brake gently to prevent the rear wheel from locking. Kymco told us that revisions to the brake force distribution system will be made to production models.

The Frost 200 displays nice balance, remaining stable and comfortable on various types of pavement.
