In the past, Harley-Davidson described itself as a very conservative company making only small changes one at a time. Engines, transmissions and overall riding dynamics have little changed from one decade to the next. However, over the past 12 years or so, the manufacturer has been animated by a newfound energy. New models like the V-Rod and XR1200 as well as numerous mechanical and stylistic upgrades are the result of this fast-pace, modern evolution.

Harley-Davidson Softail Springer CVO

The Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) program primarily aims to enhance the performance and visual signature of Harley-Davidson's factory bikes. Exclusive, limited-edition motorcycles are designed and built by special teams of technicians at the company's York, Pennsylvania and Kansas City plants.

For 2009, Harley-Davidson offers four new CVO models: the Fat Bob, Softail Springer, Road Glide (Pictured on this article heading) and, last but not least, the Ultra Classic Electra Glide featuring an all-new chassis.

Softail Springer CVO
Every bike from the CVO program is aesthetically unique. The new Softail Springer is no exception, rolling out of the factory with a host of irresistible accessories. In addition to chrome accents, the machine gets a big 240-mm rear tire and a bobtail-type rear fender. The body-colored, horseshoe-shaped fuel tank features chrome-clad external oil lines. For even more style and power, this Springer also includes a performance air filter with 110-cubic-inch logo.

Fat Bob CVO
Just one year after the introduction of the Fat Bob, the Milwaukee-based bike builder strikes back with a CVO variant of this magnificent steed. The custom-style seat was designed in partnership with Italian manufacturer Alcantara. There are also many exclusive pieces of hardware, including chrome-finished, black-painted aluminum wheels, full chrome shocks, a unique two-piece console, Ironside Collection chrome foot pegs and brushed aluminum spoilers.

All CVO models are powered by the brand's largest V-twin ever. The Twin Cam 110 delivers 1,803 cc of pure mechanical thrills. This big push-rod engine generates no fewer than 114 pounds-feet of torque at only 3,000 rpm, which should result in impressive accelerations and passing maneuvers. Furthermore, all CVOs are factory-equipped with a unique exhaust system that lets the monster express all its rage without waking up the entire neighborhood. Bravo!
