2009 BMW G450X Review

9-15-2009

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The coaxial design of the swingarm pivot and the front sprocket ensures that the distance between the two chain sprockets remains constant throughout the swingarm’s travel. The chain thus remains at optimal tension, which increases control for the rider and reduces chain wear. Naturally, this beautiful piece of engineering is protected by a solid aluminum plate running underneath the engine and tranny to deflect blows, sharp rocks and other extreme off-road hazards.

The compactness of the drive train also allowed the designers to extend swingarm length by 30 mm, and thus increasing traction when exiting corners.

No-frills race ergonomics

The hard seat, about as comfortable as a 2x4, is much more suited to aggressive trail riding than long-distance trekking. Perched 955 mm high and designed with competition in mind (Long, narrow and rock-hard), the seat conveys every one of the bike’s messages and sensations, and leaves enough room for riders to position themselves for the attack, with the inside leg pointing forward to help control when entering a corner sideways. There’s also enough room to slide one’s buns backwards and increase rear traction when exiting said corner.

The shortness of the powertrain really shows up well on this view. The resulting centralisation of the masses contributes to the bike's agility and responsiveness.

Spreadable muscle
The race-dedicated G450X delivers breathtaking performance with a leading-edge 51hp engine and ultra-efficient suspension components. Reassured by the precision of the throttle and a chassis that responds instantly to every command, the rider quickly progresses from hesitant first trials to aggressive riding. The engine’s progressiveness is surprising, first because of its obvious discretion at low speed, then because it just doesn’t seem to want to stop revving when you start pushing it.

And there’s the beauty of the G450X: efficiency and user-friendliness wrapped in a striking package designed for a wide range of rider ability.

The new G450X is a feast for the eyes and the senses, as feisty as its competitors yet easy to ride – race-style, natch. But street-legal too, with rearview mirrors, a horn, flashers and an electric starter.

Congratulations are in order for BMW’s first foray into the segment, especially given that works rider Juha Salminen just won the 2009 World Enduro Championship.
