2009 Aprilia Mana 850 Review

8-4-2009

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The smoothness of the 90-degree V-twin also makes it ideal for endless leisurely rides, though you can’t say as much about the saddle. Rather thin on the upholstery side to make room for the 16-litre tank beneath it, the saddle is shaped to help move to the inside in corners rather than serious touring. The passenger seat on the other hand is much more comfortable, with a slight bulge allowing for a better hold during hard braking manoeuvres, low and far-flung foot rests, and an ergonomic handgrip.

Riding pleasure guaranteed
The Mana’s natural driving position, low saddle and streamlined handlebars mounted on insulators offer a relaxed and pleasant riding experience, to the point where one comes up with all sorts of reasons to take to the road.

The Aprilia Mana 850 is a bike, at least outwardly, while it combines the best features of bike and scooter efficiently.

Despite its 229 kilos and a strange looking rear suspension that arouses considerable comment, the Mana 850 behaves like the average middle weight bike on smooth pavement, as can be expected with the non-adjustable fork and only pre-load and rebound damping adjustments in back. Care is required when riding tandem, as the lack of progressiveness of the rear suspension can result in some bottoming on bumpier roads.

The typically Italian trellis frame, 43mm non-adjustable but well-calibrated upside-down fork and potent braking system (320mm discs and four-piston calipers in front) make for a sporty ride, as long as you keep in mind the somewhat limited ground clearance. Be that as it may, the Mana is definitely fun and efficient on winding roads, to the point where you just want to retrace your steps and relive that a series of bends on a fun ride.
Aprilia is setting a new frontier for sport bikes with its Mana 850 and intelligent CVT. Easy to ride, with a large storage box under the fake tank, extremely efficient and nimble on winding roads, it challenges the set standards.

The Mana 850 is sure to please many a rider – and that’s just too bad for traditionalists.
