2009 Yamaha RS Venture GT Review

1-22-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

In the back, the individual preload and compression settings for the two shocks make it possible to alter the load and grip at each end of the deck, thereby improving stability and agility when cornering. Having the right settings allows the rider to enjoy optimum balance between load, surface and riding conditions.

Yamaha strongly recommends that dealers set the suspension based on the specific needs and riding style of each customer. Keep in mind that ideal settings for relaxed, two-up touring will definitely not suit a solo rider who likes to carve up trails at higher speeds.

Finding the right compromise is necessary, much like with other recreational-type vehicles. At 112 kilos, I'm halfway between typical one-up and two-up riding loads. The "perfect" settings for me will certainly not satisfy my colleague Pascal Bastien, who only weighs 70 kilos and prefers "sportier" settings. My advice to buyers you is to ask your dealer to set the machine according to your own specific requirements - some slight fine tuning on your part should help you find your own Nirvana.

Comfortable sit-up seating for the rider.

The riding position of the Yamaha RS Venture GT reminds me of a cruiser-type motorcycle: the back is upright, the thighs are horizontal and the lower legs are vertical. Designers moved the seat closer to the handlebar for easier steering, and the resulting position is ideal for a touring snowmobile since it reduces rider fatigue. Meanwhile, the long-travel suspension is effective at soaking up bumps and delivering the smooth ride everyone expects.

On the other hand, if you want to push the machine and attack corners with some kind of authority, the seat ergonomics will allow you to bring your feet back against the passenger foot risers and, consequently, enjoy a riding position that's more akin to a standard-type motorcycle, with the feet under your personal rear end but without an exaggerated bend at the knees. The seat is fairly high, which gives you the freedom you need to feel at ease. This position also allows you to rest your weight on the legs to better absorb bumps at higher speeds and slide off the seat towards the inside of a corner easily during aggressive cornering maneuvers.

Riding at high speeds on pristine trails, nicely tucked behind the large windshield, proves to be a real pleasure. You enjoy a bump-free ride and outstanding stability. Steering corrections are effortless, especially if you lean into corners.

The instrument panel features a big, easy-to-read speedometer along with the various gauges and lights one should expect. The rear passenger benefits from adjustable grip warmers (the handlebars are heated, too) and a fully-adjustable backrest that moves forward to assist solo riders.

All in all, the 2009 Yamaha RS Venture GT is a comfortable yet high-performing snowmobile that will satisfy both single-day riders and long-distance adventurers.
