2009 BMW F800GS Review

For the older, ahem, more experienced among us, the F800GS delivers enough performance for 99% of our solo activities, and it also easily accommodates a passenger.

On the road, the 800GS unhesitatingly absorbs irregularities and can quickly accelerate to (illegal) highway speeds. Throttle response in town as well as on the highway is instantaneous, and passing a car on a secondary road is done effortlessly and more often than not without having to downshift. The grips do pass on a gentle, high-frequency vibration, but nothing troubling or bothersome, especially if you're wearing gloves or have opted for thicker, softer rubber grips.

On tight trails, the overly long first gear forces you to slip the clutch in order to skirt obstacles. However, wider slippery roads become a sliding paradise, while trickier trails remain the domain of more specialized steeds.

The vertical Twin delivers 85 ponies.

Almost perfect
Comments on the looks of the bike have always been positive: it's simple and well proportioned, and without the somewhat spidery look associated with its older, well known and well loved sibling, the R1200GS.

With its reduced weight and resulting agility, the surprising performance of its engine (20 hp less than the 1200) and a user-friendliness typical of simpler bikes, the F800GS hits the bulls-eye with enthusiasts looking for generous performance, easy comfort and a motorized toy at home in town, on the road and on slippery terrain. And if the devil pushes you towards sportier activities, it won't embarrass you!

These qualities come at a price, and that of the F800GS is lower than the BMW R1200GS and the Honda Varaderos, but well above that of its more ordinary competitors, like the BMW F650GS or Suzuki V-Strom 650, more humble rides to be sure, but both under $10,000 and more accessible, in exchange for 85% of the F800GS performance. Throw in the brand's prestige, and the price gap closes nicely. The choice is yours.
