In true BearCat tradition, the 2009 Z1 XT boasts all the necessary features and accessories to handle heavy duties, including a tall windshield, sturdy bumpers, a receiver hitch, a mountain strap on the handlebar and 8-inch wide skis. The longer track (156 inches instead of the usual 121-136 like on touring and sport models) features 1.5-inch studs and delivers the same remarkable floatation off the trails. On the other hand, the track has so much bite that the machine understeers and resists changes in direction (Understeer), a characteristic made worse by the fact that the skis tend to lose grip and, therefore, their directional effectiveness.

You can add weight and thus traction at the front by addinspring preload at the back. With a more neutral set up, the BearCat becomes more enjoyable through twists and turns, so much so that it could nearly be described as sporty. Despite being excessively heavy (over 340 kilos), this Arctic Cat fares pretty well in most conditions. Finally, make sure your machine is equipped with a winch before venturing in deep snow; otherwise, you might have to walk home if you get stuck.
Four-stroke power
Riders looking for serious hauling capability were eagerly awaiting a utility snowmobile powered by a 4-stroke engine. Enters the BearCat with a more fuel-efficient, torquier Z1 powerplant, one that does not produce the unpleasant smell of a 2-stroke engines. The BearCat's final drive is shorter than that of sportier Z1-equipped models and understandably so; a utility machine needs more low-end torque to work hard, and the shorter final drive improves takeoff and low-speed throttle control.
Thanks to its new Twin Spar chassis and potent 4-stroke mill, the 2009 BearCat Z1 XT has all the makings of the most competent utility snowmobile ever designed by Arctic Cat. On top of that, it offers true riding fun and touring-like comfort.
As I said, the best of both worlds.
Versatility and capability
Pleasant, comfortable ride
Nicely-calibrated Z1 engine and final drive
Can carry up to three passengers
Understeer
Excessive weight
