2008 Yamaha XV1900 Custom S Road Test

At idle and under acceleration, the optimized flywheel mass and "damper-less" crankshaft allow the rider to feel the directness of the 1,854cc engine's power. The rider is also able to appreciate the classic V-twin sound and pulse feel. Compact, dual balancers are positioned on either end of the crankshaft to reduce unwanted vibrations and minimize the size of the engine cases.

The XV1900 Custom S uses a low-maintenance belt drive system.

Pushrod or rocker engines are known for their enormous low-end torque. This one is no exception, but it also delivers impressive power at higher revs. Between 4,000 and 5,000 rpm, the engine pulls relentlessly all the way to the redline. However, it does not like extended, high-revving action and lets you know about it when you exceed 5,000 rpm..

Power is sent to the rear wheel through an excellent 5-speed transmission and a low-maintenance belt drive system. I know I've said it earlier, but the factory-tuned exhaust note of this engine is remarkable -- like music to an enthusiast's ears.

Sought-after components
The beautifully designed components of this cruiser are mounted on a lightweight yet rigid cast aluminum frame, which is pretty rare in this segment. Yamaha engineers paid special attention to the frame and fork assembly to create a true chopper design without compromising the brand's trademark handling and stability.

Despite a fork angle of 40 degrees, this bike behaves like a classic cruiser. It requires slightly more effort when attacking corners and a bit more skills at low speed, but its riding dynamics are never unpleasant nor uncomfortable -- again, this is rare for such a motorcycle. Unlike most cruisers, which only feature a single front disc, the XV1900 Custom S boasts 298-mm dual floating discs up front with 4-piston callipers. Meanwhile, the single-piston rear calliper bites on a 320-mm disc, an unusual size for a brake disc.

The braking system is more impressive than what the competition has to offer.
