2008 Harley-Davidson 883 L First Impressions

10-17-2007

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Tradition and technology
The Sportster is without question the oldest active motorcycle on the market; the original model was introduced as far back as 1957. With each passing year, Harley-Davidson engineers made a number of modifications and improvements. One of the most important innovations has been the addition of new silentbloc-type engine mounts in 2004. Using rubber bushings, these mounts were designed to reduce undesirable vibrations.

The engine of the Sportster 883 L employs an electronic fuel injection system that was specially designed to improve the efficiency of the brand's smallest single-cylinder mill. Rest assured, the mechanical feel characteristic of the Milwaukee V-twin has remained totally intact. Granted, the engine is a tad smoother, but the improvements to the powerband were squarely aimed at enhancing the riding pleasure.

Styling at the forefront
As always, Harley-Davidson pays the utmost attention to styling. The Sportster 883 L is sublime, especially when viewed from the back. The low-profile rear end as well as the rear tire partly hidden by the mudguard give a bad-boy look to the little yet pure Harley-Davidson.

The Sportster 883 L is a magnificent, mythical bike that's easy to access for shorter riders looking for a user-friendly machine with a bite. Too bad it's not a bit more comfortable...
