2008 Yamaha Phazer RTX Trail Test

3-3-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The fuel tank of the new Phazer is 4.3-liter smaller in accordance with a new regulation implemented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition, engineers were forced to build a new double-sidewall tank for waterproofing purposes.

Unique riding position
Riding a Phazer feels like riding an ATV with skis instead of tires. True, the rider sits right in the middle, allowing precise control of weight transfers on winding trails. However, the first few models that rolled out of the assembly lines suffered from relative instability in corners, particularly on compacted snow. Even after hundreds of kilometers, my opinion on cornering stability did not change: with the Phazer, you have to remain careful upon attacking sharp turns, shifting most of your weight toward the inside so as to maintain proper control.

Riding the RTX aggressively requires much effort.

Completely revised suspension
I had the opportunity to test-ride the 2008 Yamaha Phazer RTX over 400+ kilometers of extremely tortuous, bumpy trails. With new Fox Float gas-charged dual front shocks and a fully-adjustable ProActive CK rear suspension featuring a piggyback reservoir, the suspension is a real blessing and a surprisingly effective breakthrough. It allows you to ride at average speeds without having to lean your body heavily in corners.

Rear suspension collapse is better controlled, so you can literally fly over bumps. The shocks never bottom out, even on the roughest terrains -- God bless their excellent compression and rebound adjustments. Those who like to do jumps will be happy to know that the new RTX offers smooth landings worthy of a snowcross champion. What's more, it features the brand's famous Ripsaw track with one-inch studs, arguably the best performance track in the business.

The Phazer RTX has all the ingredients to satisfy hardcore riders. Its trail dynamics are so much different than the previous model's -- or any other Phazer's for that matter -- that you absolutely have to try it to grasp the full scope of the improvements and upgrades. The 2007 Phazer was already pretty sharp thanks to an innovative powerplant and a revolutionary, ultra-sporty riding position. Now, with a breakthrough suspension, riding the 2008 Phazer RTX is a wonderful sensory experience -- a true fun-oriented machine.
