Bombardier is a jewel of the Quebec industry. However, in 2004, the ATV division took the name of Can-Am and the logo of BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products). The English appellation should come as no surprise since 70 percent of the current production is sold in the U.S.

At first glance, one immediately realizes that this is no ordinary ATV.

Still proud of their reputation, the folks at Can-Am recently gave us the opportunity to test-ride the popular Outlander series, more precisely the 2008 650 H.O. EFI XT. At first glance, one immediately realizes that this is no ordinary ATV. With aluminum wheels, a purposeful design and above-average overall length, all signs point to comfortable two-up riding over long distances. Upon closer inspection, the Outlander reveals great attention to detail and high overall quality.

With a slogan like "Feel your pulse race", riders can expect a lot of thrills and adventures, whether they go hunting, fishing, working or camping. And the Outlander is geared to back you up. Of course, there are some features more interesting and useful than others, such as the 3,000-lb BRP XL3000 winch with roller fairlead and wired remote winch control. The multifunction gauge consists of a digital display while ergonomics are enhanced by a properly designed and positioned handlebar.

Access is easy with a generous amount of room for both the rider and passenger. In XT configuration, the Outlander is even more accommodating. The two small trunks offer decent storage capacity. However, they do not seem perfectly watertight, so you have to either ride carefully or put all your stuff in plastic bags.

The seats are nicely padded and provide great comfort. The riding position is also very good and slightly higher than normal. The rear passenger sits on a raised cushion allowing excellent panoramic vision without compromising the rider's stance. The footrests are also mounted at different heights, ensuring comfort for everyone.

Not for extreme adventures
Not the most powerful in the lineup, the 649.6-cc engine delivers strong though not electrifying accelerations. Moreover, this 4-stroke, 4-valve, liquid-cooled, OHC V-twin achieves reasonable fuel economy.
