2007 Kymco Super 9 Road Test

10-4-2007

by Amyot Bachand , moto123.com

Super performer

Late last summer, I had the opportunity to try out the new Kymco Super 9. This model exceeded all my expectations in terms of what an urban scooter should be. Its top speed performance and accelerations as well as its handling and riding position make it one of the segment leaders. It easily dethrones the BW's from Yamaha and manages to keep up with the Derbi Atlantis.

Straight from Taiwan
Kymco scooters are designed and manufactured in Taiwan, while BECO Motor International brings them to Canada (since 2004). The Super 9 is the brand's best-selling model in the country. The retailer network keeps growing, mostly due to the quality of customer service.

The Super 9 proved to be a pleasant surprise.

Nice lines and colors
The two scooters at my disposal stood out as being image-conscious and attention-craving. Available in Red, Blue or Orange, the Super 9 sets itself apart thanks to unique sporty lines and body-colored 12-inch alloy wheels. Also, silver accents have been judiciously added to emphasize the overall styling. The streamlined headlight features integrated turn signals, while the prominent taillight alerts other road users that this machine rightfully belongs in traffic. If that's not enough for you, Kymco offers wireless helmet-mounted brake lights (optional).

Convenience and storage
The Super 9 can accommodate two people thanks to an extended seat, metallic footpegs and solid power. A standard helmet can be stowed underneath the seat. If necessary, an additional storage compartment can be fitted to the luggage carrier. As for the center and side stands, they are both easy to use.

Well-designed riding position
I particularly liked the riding position on the extended seat, which is devoid of a center backrest. As a result, you can slide back and forth and adjust your riding stance based on your size and weight -- regardless if your legs are long or short. The relatively low seat height allows you to put both feet on the ground at idle.

The sideview mirrors are ideally positioned and easy to adjust. And while the instrument panel is rather basic, all the essentials are included: speedometer, tachometer (very important for such a scooter), fuel gauge and the usual indicators. The controls are easily located and intuitively manipulated.

The ergonomics of this small two-wheeler have been well thought out.
