2007 Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Road Test

12-17-2007

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Power is distributed by a smooth 5-speed transmission with rounded-edge gears and lightened fixing parts -- components that deliver more accurate gear shifts. The traditional drive belt has been replaced by a high-performance carbon fiber drive belt.

Offering plenty of low- and mid-range torque, the engine pulls extremely hard when exiting corners. What a delightful feeling! On country roads, simply shift into third gear and you'll have fun like never before. Riding this motorcycle is really intuitive and rewarding with each piston stroke. The Nightster's performance matches its styling, while the handling capacity transforms winding roads into playgrounds. The 19-inch front wheel, wrapped by a narrow tire, has a lot to say in how the front end of the bike behaves on the road. I've never ridden a Harley-Davidson that makes attacking corners easier. This mount is also a blast to ride in the city thanks to its wonderful low-speed agility.

The low seat allows exceptional handling.

Unique riding position

The exclusive design of the XL 1200N is enhanced by the height of its solo seat, which stands one inch lower than that of the XL 1200 Low. At 25.3 inches, the XL 1200N Nightster is in fact the lowest-riding Harley-Davidson ever built. To create such a low design, engineers reduced the suspension travel to a strict minimum. Therefore, the suspension often feels dry which, in turn, makes the ride pretty hard. I should point out, though, that I tested a pre-production model; this issue will likely be addressed before the bike is introduced on the market.

The ultra-low seat and delicate size of the XL 1200N combine to offer extraordinary rideability. Despite weighing 251 kilos, it handles like a small-displacement motorcycle. This Harley proves excellent for shorter riders and beginners. However, tall folks will likely feel uncomfortable because the distance from the seat to the footpegs is pretty short. This makes for a sporty though odd riding position; it takes time to get used to it.

The more you ride, the more you come to like to new XL 1200N Nightster, a plainly-styled yet unparalleled motorcycle. It's affordably priced, too, which makes it even more enticing. The XL 1200N Nightster takes the Sportster lineup to a new level with its superb retro styling and the unique charm of a legendary tradition.
