2007 KTM 450 SMR First Impressions

A supermoto rider has to show incredible balance and talent in order to excel. Most of the time, supermoto races are held on a slick asphalt (or concrete) surface interrupted by sandy sections. The bikes are constantly skidding -- in a controlled manner -- which is more than enough to excite the crowd.

In Quebec, this phenomenon is fairly new but quickly growing in popularity. A couple of renowned manufacturers now sell supermoto-type machines that are ready for racing. The racetracks for supermoto events are the proving grounds most often used by KTM engineers and factory riders. The company created the SMR lineup based on the data collected during these tests.

The SMRs are the result of lengthy track tests.

Ready for racing

KTM offers two different models of supermoto bikes for racers. These mounts are equipped with specially designed race-spec slick tires. Despite its low-displacement engine, the smaller SMR is a genuine supermoto bike for the European S2 Class, one of the most competitive series on the other side of the Atlantic. When the rider takes place on the 450, he or she does not enjoy much comfort: the seat is high, narrow and especially hard, while the handlebar is very wide. Moreover, the riding position is close to the front of the bike, which requires unusual movements. That said, the 450 SMR was not made for picking up dead leaves but rather for leaving opponents in the dust.

Featherweight
The first time I straddled this bike, I found it to be very user-friendly. Its featherweight of only 108.5 kilos enables every riding fantasy to come true. The 450 SMR dives into corners with disconcerting ease. The precision of the front wheel (who said the wide handlebar was useless?) allows lightning-quick changes of direction, regardless of road conditions. The 450 SMR forgives rider mistakes while offering the chance to regain every second lost. It's also capable of extreme path corrections without breaking a sweat.

The 450 SMR is extremely lightweight and nimble.
