AMA SX: A third win for Villopoto

2-28-2011

by moto123.com

Nearly 70,000 fans were able to witness Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto third win of the season at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta last Saturday in what is the start of the eastern portion of the AMA Supercross championship.

It was James Stewart (Yamaha) who took the holeshot in the Class 450 main event followed by Chad Reed (Honda) and Justin Brayton (Yamaha).

On the second lap of the race, Reed was able to pass Stewart and the lead for almost 15 laps before a back runner allowed Stewart to reclaim the first spot. At the white flag, both riders entered the whoops, Reed diving to Stewart’s inside, when the two collided, falling to the ground. That allowed Villopoto to assume the lead and take the victory after holding down the third position for nearly the entire race.

Behind him, Stewart and Reed remounted in second and third, respectively but they were not done yet as Stewart attempted to block Reed, forcing them to make contact again, allowing Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey to pass both and grab his third consecutive runner-up finish. Reed moved past Stewart to take third.

Villopoto now holds a 10-point lead over Stewart heading into next weekend’s race presented at the Daytona International Speedway
