WSBK US: Spies Dominant In Utah

6-1-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Ben Spies (Yamaha) scored his fifth and sixth WSBK wins of the season in front of his home fans at Miller Motorsports Par, pushing closer to Championship leader Noriyuki Haga who had a less than stellar day.

On both starts, Spies, who had earned his seventh out of seven Superpole of the season, easily took the lead, followed by an impressive Shinya Nakano who catapulted from tenth on the grid to second position behind the American, and Noriyuki Haga having gone from ninth to third.

Spies started to pull away from Nakano, towards a win that looked more and more like formality, but his run to glory was interrupted by a red flag to pick up a fallen bike.

On the restart, Spies took off again and crossed the finish line with more than 10 seconds over runner-up Carlos Checa (Honda) on aggregate time, followed by Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) in third.

The second race was similar to the first, with Spies taking the lead at the first turn and never relinquishing it. Fabrizio was second at the first corner, the Italian managing to keep Spies in his sights for over half the race before settling for the runner-up slot.

Checa crashed out on lap 4, leaving the battle for the final podium place to Jonathan Rea (Honda), Leon Haslam (Honda), who crashed out on the final lap, and Biaggi (Aprilia), competitive in the race after problems in qualifying.

Championship leader Noriyuki Haga spent the day in damage-control mode after injuring his back in a qualifying spill, with ninth and eigth place finishes, which leave him with a useful 53 point lead in the rider championship mid-way through the season.

The next round of the WSBK championship will be presented at the Misano on June 21.
