Twins and Harley-Davidson back in Canadian and AMA racing with XR1200

3-24-2010

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Canadian and American race promoters have announced new classes for 2010. The Canadian series will feature V-Twins, while the AMA will focus on the XR1200 from Harley-Davidson.

Here is an extract of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship press release.

New National Championship Pro-AM Class for 2010 in Canada
The Parts Canada Superbike Championship will adopt a new class for Twin cylinder machines for the 2010 National motorcycle road racing season. This new category will replace the long-running and popular SV650 Cup class, and will consist of production-based, sports oriented twin cylinder machines.
The new class will debut at the opening 2010 Parts Canada Superbike National round at ICAR, Mirabel, Quebec on May 30.

Two basic categories will be allowed:
1. Liquid-cooled, maximum 800cc displacement, with a maximum power output of 80 as measured on the official series Dynojet Dyno. Minimum wet weight post race is 360 pounds. The liquid-cooled machinery expected to compete includes Suzuki’s SV650, several Kawasaki models including the 650cc Ninja, BMW’s F800 vertical twin, Hyosung’s GT650 model line and the new Hyosung powered Fischer MRX650.

2. Air-cooled, open displacement, with a maximum power output of 95 as measured on the official series Dynojet Dyno. Minimum weight post race is 385 pounds. Anticipated air-cooled entries include Ducati’s Sports 1000 and Monster models, Harley-Davidson’s new XR1200, BMW R models and a variety of Buell XB model push-rod equipped twins.

In addition to the spectacular high handlebar and double exhaust system, it is the nice fat front tire and 17-inch rim that make this bike for me - undoubtedly the best looking machine on any track. Harley magic indeed! Photo: AMA

On the US front, this comes from the “Vance & Hines XR1200 Series”

AMA Pro Racing Announce New Vance & Hines XR1200 Series
AMA Pro Racing and Vance & Hines are pleased to announce the launch of the new AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series, a spec-bike five race championship featuring specially modified Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles.

As the presenting sponsor, Vance & Hines will also serve as the official race kit supplier for the class. The kit will consist of a Vance & Hines XR1200 exhaust system, a fuel management system, race bodywork, single seat tail section and belly pan, 17-inch front wheel with matching front fender, steering damper, oil cooler relocator and race decal package. The cost for the complete kit will be $3500.

For 2010, the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series will race at five rounds of the AMA Pro Road Racing Championship: Elkhart Lake, WI, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Virginia International Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park, with the season finale at Barber Motorsports Park.

This is great news on both sides of the border, bringing new makes and models on the track in Canada, and an official presence by Harley-Davidson in both series.

And that great growl!
