The two races held at Brno were an opportunity for Max Biaggi and the new-for-2009 Aprilia RSV4 to shine, with the Roman MotoGP refugee on the pace all weekend and having a win and a second place to show for his efforts.

Only Ben Spies and his Yamaha were quicker than Mad Max, winning the second race after being thrown to the ground in the first race by an over aggressive Michel Fabrizio on his factory Ducati. Max Biaggi’s victory marked a return to the top step of the podium for Aprilia after missing out since Regis Laconi won at Imola in 2001.

In the first race, Fabrizio lost the front end trying to pass Spies going into a corner on lap four, and slid into Spies, taking them both out of the race. Spies vented his frustration at Fabrizio, having been denied a perfect opportunity to reduce the lead of an off song Haga (Fabrizio’s team mate!) in the rider championship. Honda riders Carlos Checa and Jonathan Rea put in a fine performance to finish respectively second and third.

In the second race, Ben Spies recovered from his disappointing first race by winning, but only after beating down a late challenge by the ever competitive Biaggi. The American now heads into the summer break just seven points behind Noriyuki Haga in the standings.

Fabrizio completed the podium in third position and, once again, just ahead of the Honda duo of Jonathan Rea and Carlos Checa.

Next stop on the tour is at the Nurburgring on August 6th.
