Ross Martin Turns his Luck around at Canterbury

3-3-2007

by Flagworld

Ross Martin overcame his own bad luck and dominated Saturday's Pro Open final, part of the WPSA PowerSports Snowmobile Tour Air Force Canterbury Snocross. It was the Pleasant Prairie, Wis. native's second consecutive class victory.

Under sunny skies, Martin (No. 837 Judnick Motorsports/Polaris) forgot about an unfortunate bobble that knocked him out the lead of the Pro Stock race Saturday morning and made the afternoon Pro Open round count, leading every lap. Iain Hayden (No. 93 Blair Morgan Racing Team/Ski-Doo) recorded his best Pro Open finish of the season, finishing second. Ryan Simons (No. 67 Speedwerx/Arctic Cat) netted his third consecutive Pro Open podium, grabbing third.

"Ending the day on a positive note is great," said Martin. "I'm taking the blame for the problems in the Stock final. I overheated the brakes, and then I had to watch everyone go past me, but that was me giving 100 percent. I didn't make the same mistake in the Open final. I got out front early, and I couldn't wait for the race to be over. It was long race and anything can happen.

"If you start looking around and you lose your concentration, that's where you screw up," added Martin. "You have to stay focused and run your own race. But that's really the hardest thing to do. There are a lot of guys out there that are fast, but until you get the mental part down, it's tough."

Other winners on Saturday were:
Junior 8-10 (300cc): Nicholas Vaage (No. 961 Brewster's/Ski-Doo)
Junior 10-13: James Johnstad (No. 154 Avalanche Racing/Polaris)
Junior 14-15: Cody Thomsen (No. 682 Dan and Jon Ebert/Arctic Cat)
Junior 16-17: Cody Thomsen (No. 682 Dan and Jon Ebert/Arctic Cat)
Women Stock: Kelly Blauw (No. 696 Ski-Doo)

Two riders were disqualified for separate rules infractions found in post-race inspection: In the Junior 8-10 class, Kaleb Dallman (No. 444 Ski-Doo), and in the Junior 16-17 class, Jamie Clements (No 266 Arctic Cat).
