Team Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards finished on top in the first free practice session for the MotoGP Grand Prix of Spain in Jerez, finishing the day just in front of frontrunner Casey Stoner on his works Ducati.

Fiat Yamaha Valentino Rossi was third, followed by Repsol Honda Nicky Hayden who ranked fourth.

The MotoGP rookies continued to show strongly, with Rossi's Fiat Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo - the reigning 250cc World Champion - nicking fifth from Andrea Dovizioso with the final lap of the session.
