MotoGP Czech Republic - Valentino Rossi wins, Lorenzo falls, Stoner out sick

8-17-2009

by moto123.com

Current MotoGP points leader Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) padded his lead as he took his fifth win of the season at Brno, while main rival Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) fell and Casey Stoner (Ducati) sat out the race because of illness.

The two Yamaha factory riders were in a league of their own throughout the race, building up a 15 sec lead at one point, with Rossi easing up to win by 12 seconds at the finish. Rossi and Lorenzo were less than a second apart from the third lap, until Lorenzo fell near the end of the race. Rossi had led from the start, with Lorenzo passing Dani Pedrosa (Honda) on the fourth lap and running with Rossi until his fall, after swapping lap records with his fellow Italian.

Lorenzo surprised Rossi on lap 16 as he took the lead, until Rossi returned the favour one lap later, surprising Lorenzo and forcing an error from him under braking. Rossi closed out the race ahead of Pedrosa, with privateer Honda rider Toni Elias beating factory Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso and Suzuki rider Loris Capirossi to the flag.

Rossi now has 212 points in the championship, a nice 50 markers ahead of Lorenzo, and 60 ahead of the absent Stoner.

The next round will be held at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 30th.
