AMA Supercross Phoenix - Dream win for Ryan Dungey, nightmare for James Stewart and Chad Reed

1-18-2010

by Marc Cantin , Auto123.com

After showing great potential in the first-ever 450 Supercross race at Anaheim, Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) won the second round of the 2010 AMA Supercross Series; grabbing the hole-shot and cruising away to a wire-to-wire win in front of a packed house.

Dungey, who had won his qualifier, pulled away to a relatively easy win over Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) and Josh Hill (Yamaha). It was Dungey’s first-ever win in the 450 class.

While Dungey had perhaps his most memorable ride in his career, it was a different story for both current champion James Stewart (Yamaha) and his arch-rival Chad Reed (Kawasaki) who piled bad luck upon mistakes and both ended the night in bad physical and series points shape.

After another bike fell on him off a triple jump on the first lap of his heat race, Stewart was carted off the track with serious pain in his stomach, but was cleared for racing by the event doctors. He went on to qualify for the main race by winning the LCQ (Last Chance Qualifier).

Both Stewart and Reed had mid-pack start, running 10th and 11th when Stewart was balked by a rider ahead of him, something that would have been easy to deal with for a fit rider. But Stewart was hurting and fell just as Reed was passing him cleanly on the inside. Reed was out right then with a rumoured broken hand, while Stewart got back on the bike and finished 15th one lap down at the end. This was Reed’s second DNF in as many weeks. That may not be all, as the two apparently met and exchanged harsh views after the race.

Dungey now holds a nine-point lead over Villopoto in the series standings (47 to 38), with Hill in third at 35 points. Stewarts sits seventh overall with 31 points.

Supercross is physical and played at very close quarters. As in hockey, officials are torn between tolerating crowd-pleasing rough stuff and losing key stars when things get out of hand. And we do it all over again for fifteen more Saturdays. Stay tuned!
