AMA Superbike: An event with MotoGP

7-17-2008

by Luc Fradette

The AMA Superbike Championship will contest, on July 18-20, two rounds at the famed Laguna Seca circuit in California. The July stop has also become an annual meeting with the superstars of MotoGP.

Some of the AMA Superbike Championship's most decorated graduates will be on hand during the MotoGP round, including; 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden and AMA 250GP champion Colin Edwards.

Because of his injuries, former AMA Formula Xtreme and Superstock king John Hopkins will be unable to compete in front of his home fans.

Some AMA Superbike stars will compete in both categories as Ben Spies will drive a third entry for Rizla Suzuki and James Hacking has been elected to replace injured John Hopkins at Kawasaki.

But for the AMA Superbike championship, Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki's Ben Spies won three times in a row the circuit, including both races last season. Spies is rolling again this season on his GSX-R1000 and carry in an imposing 40-point advantage over his teammate Matt Mladin.

The combined MotoGP/AMA Superbike round at Laguna Seca is the most attended round of the season with the three-day spectator numbers approaching 150,000.
