AMA Superbike: Spies breaks all-time record

6-11-2008

by Luc Fradette

Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki's Ben Spies notched up another historic achievement in his brief but remarkable AMA Superbike career, establishing a new all-time record with a seventh consecutive win in the first race of a doubleheader at Road America.

Altough Spies stormed from pole, his teammate and rival Mat Mladin was there right in tow. Mladin looked very racy over the race's opening four laps, regularly showing Spies a wheel and looking for a way into the lead on numerous occasions.

Mladin was a solid second clear of third-ranked Jamie Hacking, who scored his fifth podium in succession. Canadian rider Miguel Duhamel finished 5th.

In the second race, Mat Mladin ended teammate Ben Spies win streak at seven with a brilliant performance on Sunday afternoon at Road America. The win is the 67th of Mladin's illustrious career and his fourth of the season after opening the year three-for-three.

Ben Spies took second, three seconds behind his teammate while Kawasaki's James Hacking finished third some 21 seconds back while American Honda's Neil Hodgson was once again the fourth fastest man on track.

In this race, Miguel Duhamel finished 6th.
