Josh Hayes (Yamaha) claimed the second and third AMA American Superbike wins of his career at Mid-Ohio this past weekend, beating a frustrated Mat Mladin on both days and emerging a clear winner above the rest of the pack.

In the first race, Hayes started from pole position, then losing the lead only once during the 21-lap race, falling behind the Suzuki of Blake Young in Turn 2 on the first lap. Hayes regained the lead on lap 6, and ran out the remaining 15 laps of the race, finishing just .183 seconds ahead of a hungry Aaron Yates (Suzuki).

Six-time champion Matt Mladin (Suzuki) finished third after struggling in qualifying and starting from ninth before steadily working his way through the field.

In the Sunday race, Hayes took control ahead of the battling pair of Ben Bostrom (Yamaha) and Tommy Hayden (Suzuki), who ended up second and third. Mat Mladin ended up seventh after a trouble-plagued weekend, claiming inexplicable technical problems on a bike that has dominated so far in 2009.

Hayes and Bostrom completed a rare Yamaha 1-2 while it was also Yamaha’s first two consecutive victories since Colin Edwards won three in a row in 1994.

Round 9 will take place on July 31st on the Heartland Park in Topeka (KS).
