AMA SX: James Stewart comes through in Toronto

3-30-2009

by moto123.com

Yamaha's James Stewart won his ninth race of the '09 season, in front of more than 37,000 fans inside Toronto's Rogers Centre, after leading every lap of the final. With four races left of the 17-race title chase, the championship battle is coming down to a straight fight between Stewart and Chad Reed, the Suzuki rider who arrived in Toronto with an 11 point lead in the championship.

With that victory, Stewart leaves Toronto only 8 points down on Reed, with four more races left to close up and possibly win the championship at the season finale in Las Vegas, in a winner-take-all scenario.

Suzuki rider Mike Alessi got the hole shot in the final, ahead of Kawasaki's Tommy Hahn and Stewart, while Reed emerged fifth from the usual first corner melee. The series' dominant riders mad short work of their opponents, gaining the top positions before the end of the first lap, and then running off and hiding from everyone.

Reed stayed close to Stewart throughout the first half of the race, then settled for second place, en route to recording his ninth runner-up finish of 2009. Yamaha's Josh Hill finished a season-best third.

Racing continues next Saturday, April 4, in Jacksonville (FL). You can watch the drama on SpeedTV.
