2015 Yamaha FJ-09 Preview

1-25-2015

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Following the Bolt, FZ-09, and FZ-07, Yamaha's lineup keeps expanding with the launch of the new 2015 FJ-09, a so-called “sporty multi-use machine” that's powered by the famous 3-cylinder Crossplane Concept engine. It's a generously equipped streetfighter that combines the spirited performance of a standard sport bike with the versatility of an adventure bike.

Inspired by the Fazer 8 and Super Ténéré
The new 2015 Yamaha FJ-09 sports a multilayered fairing that integrates twin LED headlights styled after the Fazer 8. Basic features include an adjustable windshield, handlebar and rider seat, as well as a centre stand, hand guards, and a 12V outlet. Saddlebags and pre-wired hot grips will be offered as Genuine Yamaha accessories.

Derived from the Super Ténéré, the comprehensive, fully digital instrument panel is easy to read. The passenger benefits from a raised seat, plenty of legroom, and a pair of grab rails. Elsewhere, fuel tank capacity is up from 14L to 18L, which should provide a range of more than 300km according to Yamaha.

Motivated like the FZ-09
At the heart of the new FJ-09 is the capable and sweet-sounding triple from Yamaha. This 847cc unit produces 113 hp and 64.3 lb-ft of torque at 8,500 rpm. The Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) system electronically controls the throttle valves for outstanding response and improved control at all rpms. Unlike the FZ-09, which features no electronic aids whatsoever, the FJ-09 gains a new traction control system that can be turned off if desired. ABS and three riding modes are also part of the game (one of the modes is designed for slippery conditions).

Dual 298mm front discs (with radial callipers) and a 245mm rear disc handle braking duties. The frame is identical to the FZ-09's, while the longer-travel suspension consists of a 41mm inverted front fork and a link-type Monocross rear setup. Despite its size and equipment, the FJ-09 retains a light curb weight of 207kg (190kg with all tanks empty).

Bottom line
Yamaha created a versatile new street bike with a natural riding position. Like a Swiss Army knife on two wheels, the 2015 FJ-09 ($10,999) seems capable of anything. Expect many riders to fall in love with it, whether draped in Deep Metallic Red or Matte Metallic Grey.
