11-4-2014

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

Man, it's hard to keep track of all the name and model changes within the Arctic Cat family these days! The all-new 2015 Arctic Cat XR 550 Limited EPS is one of the most expensive (base MSRP $11,599) and better-equipped medium-displacement, full-size ATVs in the brand's reshuffled recreation lineup.

Let's start with the 550 H1 engine, which is a 545cc, SOHC, 4-stroke, single-cylinder unit with liquid cooling and electronic fuel injection. It supplies plenty of pulling, accelerating and climbing power to handle any task at hand. By the way, the engine has been mounted further forward in the chassis, which results in 3” of additional foot space.

Of course, one of the big draws of this particular model is electronic power steering (EPS), especially during low-speed manoeuvres. The steering post angle that has been moved rearward by 5 degrees for easier-to-turn cornering, and Arctic Cat claims the power steering motor responds faster than you can blink. Anyway, your arms will definitely appreciate it.

With a lower seating profile and improved ergonomics, Arctic Cat's Ride-In suspension is said to deliver sharper cornering without sacrificing ground clearance (11”) or suspension travel (10” at both ends). Double A-arms optimize wheel motion translating into more responsive steering, as well. The 2015 Arctic Cat XR 550 Limited EPS also rides on Duro 3 Star Kadens which are smooth-riding tires with excellent grip.

Elsewhere, the heavy-duty steel bumpers will effectively protect the chassis while enhancing the machine's rugged looks. Speaking of looks, the sophisticated XR 550 Limited EPS follows a growing trend in the auto industry by sporting LED projector headlamps and an LED light bar that not only provides additional visibility, but also extra style. Meanwhile, the LED taillights will give those people you leave in a trail of dust something cool to look at.

New in 2015, Arctic Cat’s famed SpeedRack II system is now constructed from high-grade plastic with reinforced steel underneath. The TPE rubber coating keeps objects from sliding around, too. Cargo capacity is rated at 100lbs up front and 200lbs in the rear.

Other convenient features include a 3,000lb winch and front and rear brushguards (both exclusive to the Limited model), a 5.45-litre, water-resistant storage compartment in the rear, and a digital gauge featuring all the essential indicators: tachometer, speedometer, trip mileage, gear indicator, digital clock, and fuel indicator.

The 2015 Arctic Cat XR 550 Limited EPS is available in black only.
