2009 Yamaha ATV Preview

12-29-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Raptor
Yamaha still offers the most comprehensive selection of sport ATVs on the market. Originally introduced in 2006, the Raptor family comes back with a new SE model boasting more features than ever. For 2009, the Raptor 700R SE receives a more capable, fade-free braking system with wave-style rotors. The hybrid design of the chassis (high-tensile steel up front and die-cast aluminum in the back) makes the largest of all Raptors the lightest large-displacement sport ATV there is. The front suspension, derived from the YZF 450, incorporates longer A-arms for superior travel and enhanced overall stability. What's more, this ATV gets 45-mm footrests, a more user-friendly throttle lever, fully-digital instrumentation as well as new color schemes.

Meanwhile, the smaller yet highly-attractive Raptor 250 SE now boasts upgraded shocks with piggyback reservoir and adjustable compression damping -- something that will be extremely appreciated by those who love bumps and jumps.

YZF 450R
Featuring one of the most potent single-cylinder engines under 500 cc, the YZF is a high-performance pure sport ATV. For this upcoming year, Yamaha is launching the more advanced R model -- and competitors better watch out. The 5-valve titanium engine gets a new electronic fuel injection system to improve efficiency regardless of temperature or altitude. The crankcases have been beefed up and the oil tank and lines are now integrated for improved durability and a lower center of mass. The new crankshaft has a larger-diameter big-end bearing, a stronger connecting rod and a smoother counter-balancer shaft.

The chassis of the YZR 450R has been completely redesigned. Both the main and sub frames are cast aluminum, while the lower frame is made of steel. A "Zero Weld" design makes for maximum strength, easier maintenance and a lower center of gravity (since the engine sits closer to the ground). The R also boasts a longer wheelbase to allow superior handling as well as increase stability in corners. Ground clearance has been increased, while longer A-arms increase the effectiveness of the suspension over bump.

In terms of ergonomics, the machine offers a new seat that's narrow in the front for easy transitions from side to side, but wide in the back to help cushion the landings and rough corners. The footrests are longer, while the Protaper aluminum handlebar is ultra-light and ultra-sturdy. Additionally, the YZF 450R rides on 20-inch rear tires and brand-new shocks with piggyback reservoir offering adjustable high- and low-speed compression, , rebound and pre-load.

As you can see, Yamaha keeps enlarging and improving its ATV lineup, much to the delight of mud and rough terrain enthusiasts.
