AMA SX - Ryan Villopoto wins Anaheim III, makes it a crowd atop the standings

2-15-2010

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) edged out Josh Hill (Yamaha) in the first turn of the latest AMA Supercross round, presented for the third time this year at Angel’s Stadium in Anaheim, and earned his second win of the year. Points leader Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) could only muster a fourth after a poor start.

Villopoto’s win along with the runner-up finish by Josh Hill means that three riders now top the standings, separated by just three points: Dungey and Hill are tied at the top, with Villopoto just three points back.

Villopoto led all twenty laps of the final after passing Hill at the exit of turn-one and managed his pace, crossing the line with a 4.6 sec margin of victory.

After six races on the west coast (including Phoenix), the series moves east to Indianapolis with Villopoto, who likes the eastern venues, carrying a good bit of momentum into next week’s Indy round.

For Hill, this weekend’s finish in Anaheim marked his fourth straight second-place finish. Hill stuck tight to Villopoto for the first few laps, but a couple of mistakes at the midway point allowed Villopoto to pull away.

There was no official word on when James Stewart or Chad Reed will return, presumably to show all these kids the way to win a race!
