Transmissions and friction clutches in oil bath

2-19-2008

Castrol DEXTRON III
In some cases, you can use a type of oil other than the one recommended by the manufacturer. I myself tried the DEXTRON III oil, designed for automatic transmissions; however, its properties are better suited for intensive riding, especially racing. Obviously, you need to change it more often, probably once a week if you ride for more than two days straight. You'll enjoy smoother shifts and improved rideability due to the increased friction between the clutch plates. (With an automatic transmission, gears are actually driven by multiplate clutches.) So, in my opinion, this oil is definitely appropriate for sport ATVs.

Pay attention to the clutch cable; you have to lubricate it frequently with the help of a small, easy-to-use gadget found at any ATV or motorcycle retailer. Simply take the cable off at the point of the clutch lever and slide the tool on the cable wire. Said tool is tightened using the knob and a lubricant is applied on the cable. Spray some through the small hole of the lubricating tool and stop once you see it come out at the other end of the cable.

This wraps up our series of features on ATV drivetrain components.
