Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) won his fifth AMA Supercross event of the 2010 season in St Louis, before 60,000 fans, after Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) took himself out of the race and the 2010 championship with a hard crash while leading mid-way through the race.

Nick Wey (Kawasaki) was in front at the start of the race as Dungey and Davi Millsaps (Honda) made their way through turn one in second and third respectively. Dungey moved into the lead on the first lap, with Villopoto up to second on lap two, and chasing Dungey hard, as he needed a win to make up his season points deficit on Dungey.

On lap nine of twenty, Villopoto ran into Dungey, the two going down and resuming still at the front, with Villopoto now leading Dungey, but on lap 11, Villopoto suffered a horrific crash and was unable to return to the race. Villopoto fell way short on a triple, with the bike landing on the upslope, while he had jumped off the bike in mid-air and landed hard on flat ground well past the third bump.

Dungey held on for the win, while Honda riders Kevin Windham and Andrew Short finished second and third.

No more information has come out about Villopoto’s condition, but witnesses doubted that he would come back in full form for the remaining rounds, thereby effectively handing the 2010 Championship to Dungey.
Next stop is Seattle this coming weekend.
