2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX Preview

2-2-2014

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

Half-way between the trail-oriented Phazer R-TX and the mountain-craving Phazer M-TX, the new-for-2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX is an entry-level crossover that will delight those who have the desire to gently explore the backcountry on a snowmobile with a small, quiet, and efficient powerplant.

The 2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX's quick-revving, high-torque Genesis engine uses a lightweight, counterbalanced crankshaft and advanced fuel injection to deliver precise throttle response, lively acceleration, reduced vibration, as well as great mileage (a good thing because the fuel tank contains a mere 26.7 L). This so-called ''Sport Performance,'' 499cc, 4-stroke, 2-cylinder engine produces only 80 horsepower, so don’t expect to slice through powdery trails and farm fields like you would with the FX Nytro X-TX or Viper X-TX, or any other crossover snowmobile.

The 144'' long Freeride track with 1.5'' lugs should prove stable enough in varying conditions, from hard-packed trails to fresh, deep snow. Of course, agility is this sled's main strength. Using the FX chassis as the backbone for its sport rider-forward position, which is inspired from the popular YZ dirtbike, the 2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX banks on a narrow track (14'' wide vs. 15'' on Apex and FX Nytro models), upright ergonomics, a light frame, and a focus on mass centralization to ensure nimble handling. Let's not forget the Tuner dual-keel skis that greatly reduce darting.

The front suspension with Fox Float air shocks (8.7'' of travel) has been specifically engineered to accommodate the 2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX's unique weight distribution and handling needs. Because of the naked front end design, the A-arms need to be longer than even the second-generation design found on the Deltabox II chassis models. The Phazer X-TX also features lightweight extruded aluminum spindles.

Shared with the Phazer M-TX, the second-generation ProMountain rear suspension (14.3'' of travel) offers a number of unique features, in addition to the narrowness. The carrier wheels on the rear upper cross shaft are oversized to improve their efficiency and reduce friction. The rear mount is built with a cantilever system to allow the track tension to remain consistent through the compression travel. Moreover, the rear arm has coupling blocks.

Other 2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX highlights include standard electric start, Electric Shift reverse, hand warmers, and a comprehensive digital gauge.

At $9,499, the simple and modest 2014 Yamaha Phazer X-TX is by far the brand's least expensive crossover model, and a pretty affordable alternative for recreational riders and beginners who love the trails but also want a taste of life beyond.
