2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS Preview

2-4-2014

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

MV Agusta never ceases to amaze with hot new models. Following the Brutale 675 and 800 ABS, then the F3 800 and F4RR ABS, here's the 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS, a naked bike that's like a cross between a standard street bike and a supermotard.

From a styling point of view, the Rivale 800 was unmistakably penned by MV Agusta designers. With a mouthwatering combination of graceful curves and sharp angles, a triangular headlight, big radiator cowls, MX-style hand guards, and a sleek, tinted windscreen, this machine has all the ingredients to win over enthusiasts.

More akin to a supermotard than a street bike, actually, the long and narrow 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS boasts a unique short-tail treatment featuring a pair of taillights that double as turn signals. In terms of fit-and-finish, the company has made major headway. ''It's the best MV Agusta we've ever built,'' claims CEO Giovanni Castiglioni.

One thing's for sure: The 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS ranks among the industry's most beautiful designs of all time.

The frame is made of steel up front (trellis) and aluminum in the rear. Braking is handled by dual discs with radial Brembo callipers and ABS. An upside-down Marzocchi front fork and Sachs rear shock (adjustable preload, compression, and rebound) complete the package.

Derived from the Brutale 800, the 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS offers increased seat height (+70 mm), a wide, flat handlebar (in supermotard fashion), and friendlier geometry. The goal is to lessen riding effort while improving both stability and precision.

Revised electronics for the road
The 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS uses the Italian brand's signature triple-cylinder engine, but adds a few tweaks to the air box and electronics. Calibrated for the road, it generates 125 hp at 12,000 rpm (vs. 148 hp in the F3 800 supersport) and generous mid-range torque.

MV Agusta has completely reinvented its Motor and Vehicle Integrated Control System (MVICS), which many have criticized in the past due to radical settings and an over-sensitive throttle. Four engine maps are available including Sport, Normal, Wet, and Custom, traction control offers eight levels of adjustment, and the 6-speed transmission features Electronically Assisted Shift (EAS).

All 2014 MV Agusta models are said to benefit from improved throttle management. The full ride-by-wire system will now show more transparency and precision, while engine braking will prove more consistent. The other good news is that the latest version of MVICS can be retrofitted to existing MV Agustas at the dealership.

Summing up the 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS
The all-new Rivale 800 ABS arrives like a big breath of fresh air at MV Agusta. Gone are the days of MV Agusta products with tons of potential lacking even an ounce of maturity. This one looks poised to match the competition, and even take the lead. We plan to test ride the 2014 MV Agusta Rivale 800 ABS this summer, so don't miss our future review.
