2013 Yamaha Grizzly Preview

9-30-2012

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

A staple of Yamaha's multipurpose ATV lineup, the Grizzly is a proven machine designed for those who seek capability and versatility. It returns virtually unchanged for 2013, meaning that it won't match CAN-AM's 800 cc and 1.0L options with the Outlander.

That being said, the 2013 Yamaha Grizzly 550 remains the king of medium-displacement 4x4 ATVs with a 558 cc powerplant. This liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder unit is derived from the heavier Grizzly 700 (686 cc), which still claims to have one of the best power-to-weight ratios around. Electronic fuel injection allows for instantaneous cold starts using 40- and 44-mm throttle bodies, respectively. Elsewhere, the straight driveshaft reduces vibration and increases durability.

While the fuel tank is mounted under the seat to lower the 2013 Yamaha Grizzly's centre of gravity and improve handling, the air box is positioned up high to reduce the chance of water and debris entering the engine.

A fully automatic Ultramatic transmission with dual range drives this ATV, and a centrifugal clutch maintains belt tension for reduced wear. The push-button On-Command system includes 2WD, limited-slip 4WD and Diff-Lock 4WD settings for ideal propulsion, regardless of conditions.

The available electronic power steering (EPS) on the 2013 Yamaha Grizzly should provide extra comfort on rough trails, especially in 4WD mode. It offers variable assist based on speed and torque. Riders will also enjoy ample ground clearance from a long-travel independent suspension to get them over any terrain. Moreover, four-wheel disc brakes combined with full-time engine braking means that slowing down requires less effort.

Other notable characteristics on the 2013 Yamaha Grizzly include an air cushion seat, floorboards with large holes for mud evacuation, water-resistant storage, and a comprehensive LCD gauge cluster.

Both the Grizzly 550 and Grizzly 700 come in standard, EPS, and EPS LE models (a mid-level SE edition is also available with the latter, offering all the features of the standard model plus cast aluminum wheels and special colours and graphics). Pricing ranges from $8,999 to $11,599.

In addition to the Outlander, competition comes from the Honda TRX, Polaris Sportsman, Suzuki KingQuad and Kawasaki Brute Force.
