2013 Yamaha FZS Preview

7-22-2013

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

Evoking Yamaha's world-championship race heritage, the FZ Series is said to usher in an entirely new category of watercraft -- the Super Sport -- that aims to meet the demands of enthusiasts looking for solo domination on the water.

Light and nimble
Built in the spirit of the legendary GP competition series, the 2013 Yamaha FZS is a sit-down watercraft made for stand-up riding. Allowing the bow to be trimmed up or down, the Quick Shift Trim System can be easily adjusted to suit the rider’s preferences and water conditions (24 settings are available).

The new NanoXcel hull is designed for superior agility and tight cornering ability, with a dihedral-shaped keel that also allows riders to achieve a higher top speed. Meanwhile, the aggressively styled, sport-bolstered seat is ergonomically designed and contoured for added support during extreme riding conditions. If need be, it can even sit three people.

Supercharged!
Similar to the VXR HO, the 2013 Yamaha FZS is powered by a 1,812cc engine that boasts the largest displacement in the personal watercraft industry. While the addition of an intercooled supercharger makes for increased power, this engine is also the most fuel-efficient in its class and optimized to deliver the best performance using regular unleaded fuel.

It's a sophisticated unit that features four electronically controlled fuel injectors, a throttle position sensor (TPS), as well as intake air pressure and air temperature sensors. The power generated by the 1.8L engine is sent to a 155 mm, hyper-flow jet pump propulsion system consisting of a large-capacity intake duct, a newly developed impeller, a large diameter nozzle, and other high-performance components.

Moreover, the Yamaha Engine Management System (YEMS) governs Off-Throttle Steering (OTS) that activates when the operator releases the throttle lever and attempts to steer, effectively making cornering manoeuvres easier when the watercraft is decelerating.

Innovative
Yamaha launches the industry's first telescopic handlebars. Exclusive to the FZ Series, this three-position steering column gives you the option to ride seated or standing. In addition, with the touch of a button on Yamaha's innovative, remote-controlled transmitter, you can activate and deactivate the 2013 FZS' digital security system and all-new Low RPM mode from up to 30 feet away. The latter limits top speed and helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 26%.

There are other great features to tell you about such as the new, automotive-style analogue instrument panel that adds a sporty feel to the ride, and the slant detection switch that will stop the engine and oil pumps immediately if the watercraft becomes overturned.

Just like last year, the 2013 Yamaha FZS starts at $16,273. Colour choices include Deep Blue and Velocity Yellow.
