2009 Honda Big Red Review (video)

5-5-2009

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Innovative features
Multiple patented innovations set Big Red apart from more conservative models, such as rubber-mounted bucket seats designed to comfortably fit a wide range of body types and reduce fatigue on long drives. There's also a nonskid, high-durability floor for the driver and passenger, as well as a "dead pedal" footrest for the driver.

In terms of protection, Big Red further innovates with 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seat belts, an automatic fuel system shut-off in case of tip over, and seat belt release mechanisms, a top-speed limiter, protective nets over the doors, and a four-pillar Occupant Protection Structure (OPS), a good old roll cage in NASCAR parlance.

Highlights include rubber-mounted bucket seats designed to comfortably fit a wide range of body types.

Stable and safe
Big Red makes short work of obstacles thanks to a relatively short wheelbase and above-average approach and descent angles. While not designed for sports driving, it proved more stable than rivals in corners and climbs due to its ultra-low center of gravity and wide track, which does on the other hand limit Big Red to wider paths than a typical Quad. Users quickly become confident at the helm, which encourages them to explore the toughest terrains.

Big Red's tilting cargo box boasts a 227-kg capacity, features a steel floor protected by a sturdy, automotive-bumper-grade polypropylene liner, while hooks on the floor help secure the load. You can tilt the box by using either one of the side levers, while a progressive-action damper strut makes for a more gentle tipping action.

Lots of space for humans
Big Red offers a spacious cab with plenty of legroom and easy access for all body sizes, courtesy of wide-opening door panels. The controls are nicely laid out and easy to use; however, there are no gauges -- only indicator lights. I also noticed a lack of protection between the box and cabin, so beware of any sharp tool or loose cargo item under braking or going downhill.

In recap, Honda offers a modern, heavy-duty, side-by-side utility vehicle ready for hard work, but with smooth riding dynamics perfectly suited for leisure-type activities. Big Red is rugged yet comfortable and user-friendly, and reflects Honda's quality and reliability reputation. With a stable chassis and innovative safety features, Big Red delivers unprecedented levels of protection and peace of mind to users.
